Calder Classics Scholarship Fund
At Calder Classics we believe the opportunity to study Classics while in High School creates profound benefits for a student’s educational trajectory. We are working actively through the Calder Classics Scholarship Fund* to expand the number of students who can explore this academic field. We have observed many times among our Scholarship students that the opportunity to travel abroad on educational programs and to further their studies in the Classics is life-changing. We have also seen very clearly that the participation of scholarship students in our programs makes the experience immeasurably better for all participants. To concentrate the impact of the Scholarship Fund, we have partnered exclusively with two amazing organizations we have supported and worked with for over 25 years.
Prep-for-Prep selects high-performing inner-city students and supports them with scholarships, tutoring, counseling, and other opportunities at the top high schools around New York City and in boarding schools. Our many personal relationships with students and staff members of this organization have improved our own institution in innumerable ways. Latin is among the first summer courses students take after they are selected to join Prep in the 4th grade. Many continue their study of the Classics throughout high school and college.
Squash and Education Alliance (SEA) selects inner city middle school students and provides them sports training, counseling, tutoring, and assistance in obtaining scholarships to top high schools and boarding schools. The program provides a safe afterschool space and teaches social skills and teamwork, bonding around the sport of squash. Most importantly, however, SEA focuses on education while providing their student-athletes with opportunities to acculturate beyond their home neighborhoods through squash tournaments and summer travel. Like with Prep, our connections with SEA through the sport of squash, and the many SEA students we have interacted with over 25 years are beyond measure.
*The Calder Classics Scholarship Fund is a component fund of the Essex County Community Foundation (ECCF), a 501c3 entity. Tax-deductible donations to the Fund support scholarships for students from Prep for Prep and Squash and Education Alliance (SEA) to attend Calder Classics online and travel programs.
100% of donation proceeds go to fund our scholarships.
Dear Cindy, I’m writing to let you know that I’m a senior now, and my first college acceptance came out this December– I’m going to Harvard!!! Thank you SO much for hosting such an amazing trip during my junior year. Getting to study Latin in Rome was truly an invaluable experience, and I even got to speak about some of the things I learned there (like Mussolini’s adaptation of Augustan imagery during Italy’s fascist period) in my college interviews. I also really appreciate that Calder Classics provides scholarships to Prep for Prep students. Without your generosity, I wouldn’t have been able to attend this amazing program!
