Online Programs
Calder Classics offers a range of unique and highly effective online courses developed and honed over the past five years. These half-day courses can be fit conveniently into a student's busy spring and summer schedule, and provide excellent preparation for a future Calder Classics travel program. In all of our courses, the Classics come alive through the interplay of literature, art, and ancient and modern history.

Summer 2024 will be our 5th year offering summer online programs. As new course offerings are confirmed, we will list them here, with links to the relevant course pages.
Introduction to Ancient Greek
Introduction to Ancient Greek is offered in June and July in two week sessions, meeting weekdays for 2.5 hour classes beginning at either 10:30am EDT or 8pm EDT (please be certain to make the correct start time selection on the application form).
Students may choose from the following sessions:

Ancient Greek & Roman Philosophy (*New in 2024)
From Socrates and the Sophists to Stoicism and Neoplatonism, this course will take you through all the important philosophical doctrines of ancient antiquity. (Note: This is not a translation course. No prior language skills necessary).

Early Chinese Philosophy & Practice (*New in 2024)
Learn the foundations of ancient Chinese thought. This class will include a special focus on recently unearthed manuscripts and how archaeologists and linguists discover and translate these rare documents. (Note: This is not a translation course. No prior language skills necessary).

Ancient European Architecture (*New in 2024)
The religious beliefs, aesthetic influences, and engineering innovations of ancient Greece and Rome reverberate through the centuries, represented in many structures still standing today. Learn the fundamental concepts of architecture through the history of ancient European amphitheaters, temples, arches, and aqueducts. (Note: This is not a translation course. No prior language skills necessary).

Fall of the Roman Republic (*New in 2024)
This course examines the Fall of the Republic through 6 major players in the 1st century BCE: Crassus, Pompey, Cicero, Caesar, Antony, and Octavian. Explore the history, economics, and politics of this explosive period through visual, historical, literary and discussion-based components. (Note: This is not a translation course. No prior language skills necessary).
July 22 - August 2, M/T/W/T/F 11am-1pm EDT

Ancient Mesoamerican Culture (*New in 2024)
This new Calder Classics course will guide you through the history and culture of the ancient Olmec, Zapotec, Maya, Toltec, and Aztec peoples. Gain a deeper knowledge of the core of Central American history. (Note: This is not a translation course. No prior language skills necessary).

Latin AP Prep Course: Caesar + Vergil
An intensive preparatory course for avid high school Latin students led by a teacher/scholar who is highly experienced with the Latin AP exam. We make the Classics come alive by looking at the interplay of Caesar's and Vergil's literary works with social and artistic representations of their public image through the ages. Calder Classics invites students planning to take the Latin AP exam to apply for this upper-level course. Students not taking the exam are also welcome to apply and will assuredly enjoy the primary and secondary readings and discussions. All of our courses are designed for students committed to actively participating in our atmosphere of intellectual freedom and interdisciplinary exchange.
Caesar readings; 5 Sundays, Oct. 15 - Nov. 12, 10:30am - 1pm.
Vergil readings; 5 Sundays, Nov. 19 - Dec. 17, 10:30am - 1pm. $800.
Upper Level Reading Latin
Online Upper Level Reading Latin courses are offered in June through August in two week sessions, meeting weekdays for two and one half hour classes (three hours for AP Prep). Students may choose from the following sessions:
June 26-July 7, “Journeys to the Underworld”. Upper Level. Taught by Dr. Frances Bernstein. Monday - Friday, 10:30am - 1pm (EDT).
July 24-August 4, “Roman Voices”. Upper Level. Taught by Sarah Grover. Monday - Friday. 10:30am to 1pm (EDT).
July 31-August 11, “Latin AP Prep”. Upper Level. Taught by Dr. Eric Casey. Monday-Friday 10:30am to 1:30pm (EDT).
