Homeric Storytelling + Creative Writing Workshop in Essex: June 17-24, 2023
A unique summer Classics-inspired Writing Workshop in Essex, Massachusetts designed for high school students to hone their Creative Writing skills and learn about ancient Homeric storytelling techniques. Here we make storytelling and composition come alive through an interplay of classical studies, ancient epic, and Greek myth.
Storytelling
Over the course of the week, Jeff Wright, our resident performance storyteller, will share the full story arc of the Trojan War Epic, from its mythic origins on Mount Olympus, through its shattering conclusion on the Night of the Trojan Horse. Jeff’s performance will include the epic’s most iconic moments, and its most celebrated characters, including Achilles, Odysseus, Paris, and Helen of Troy. Jeff’s overarching goal will be sharing his infectious passion for Greek epic, and empowering course participants so that they can “sing Homer, in the 21st century” in myriad ways.
Writing
In the afternoons, students will be invited to dive deeper into aspects of this epic through writing discussions and prompts. Using Jeff’s stories as a jumping off point, lessons will focus on character arcs, use of language, and contemporary applications of ancient stories. Our writing will fill in the silences, imagining conversations where Homer left gaps, or writing from previously un-explored perspectives. We will write across genres from poetry to short stories to drama. Student writing will ultimately be workshopped and revised for a final reading or performance at the end of the week.
Calder Classics is excited to offer this Upper-Level course based on the study of Classics, but requiring NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OF ANCIENT GREEK OR LATIN LANGUAGE. By observing and discussing the Trojan War Epic and writing our own interpretations, this course makes the Classics come alive for accomplished students looking to write at a high level.
