Calder Classics is an educational boutique that offers customized learning experiences associated with the Classics. We are founded on the premise that understanding, and critique, of modern culture is enhanced through thoughtful interaction with the legacy of the ancients.
- Calder Classics offers high school and college students interdisciplinary Greek and Latin language programs abroad in the spring and summer. Through an interaction with local art and architecture, all our students deepen their understanding of ancient and modern literature and culture, and develop a lifelong appreciation of the Classics. Our approach to teaching includes an investigation into how and why the Classics have endured and woven themselves so deeply into our modern lives. We explore the original stories from multiple angles, along with later adaptations and interpretations, some direct and others divergent. During the last 8 years students have joined us from over 95 public and private high schools in North America, South America and Asia and have gone on to attend 57 top colleges and universities. Our 2020 travel programs are suspended due to COVID19, however we look forward to our 2021 calendar which includes the repeat of two highly successful new programs from 2019: SPRING BREAK in Rome, and a new upper level course for Greek and Latin students in TUSCANY. We also offer the following annual Summer Programs: Advanced Reading Latin courses in Florence and Rome as well as a Classics-inspired Creative Writing Workshop and Introduction to Ancient Greek in Florence. - Founded initially to provide opportunities for scholarship students to travel abroad and learn about the Classics in their birthplace, we continue to expand our original mission to spread knowledge of the Greek and Roman classics to new and diverse audiences. We host events that include the Calder Classics Scholarship Salon Series, in support of raising scholarships for Prep-for-Prep and CitySquash students to attend Calder Classics programs. The Salon Series promotes a lively exchange of ideas in an intimate salon or dinner party setting. Inspired by topics related to the Classics, speakers kick off these gatherings with a talk about their academic specialty, and then guide guests in scintillating discourse. These events are enriched by good food and refreshments with a “classic” touch. We also offer Adult Group and Private "Learning to Read Greek or Latin" Lessons in Brooklyn. Some of our teachers are available for our Classics Tutoring service in which Calder Classics Scholars provide one-on-one or small group tutoring sessions to middle school, high school, college and adult students. Finally, our Rome based Scholars are available for bespoke Classics-oriented tours.
- Led by Cindy Calder, our Scholars are all well established in their fields with unusually creative, intellectual and academic backgrounds. Cindy developed this educational boutique in 2012 with the belief that studying the Classics, when complemented with a first-hand experience of art, history and culture, enriches younger students’ academic experience and encourages adults to re-engage in the joys of learning. She earned her B.A. from Dartmouth and her M.A. in Classics from Columbia University and now teaches at Trinity School in New York City. She lives with her husband in Brooklyn and is the mother of four boys.
